I don’t play chords on the Oud much or emphasize learning them. I prefer a more traditional approach, but I thought this would be a fun post and I was requested to provide some material for this purpose.

Important notes:

1. It is not necessary to learn chords on the Oud.

2. This is not a traditional way of playing.

3. Oud chords can sometimes be used  to highlight, ornament, or accompany singing.

The basic chords covered are as follows:

C Major D Major E Major F Major G Major A Major B Major

C Minor D Minor E Minor F Major G Major A Major B Major

C7 D7 E7 F7 G7 A7 B7

Key Tips:

It is very difficult to accurately play these chords. It is not recommended to spend a lot of time learning these, because you won’t use them much. Nevertheless, it is good to know how to play them, because from time to time it might come in handy.

If you can’t use every finger called for each chord, start by playing two-note chords.

Use chords to practice arpeggios on the Oud using downstrokes for each note.

Practicing chords may help develop your ear by teaching yourself to place your fingers in the right place and hearing what sounds harmonious to the ear.
